Our Verdict

The Star Gold Coast is more than its casino floor. The Broadbeach location is genuinely better than Surfers Paradise for dining and atmosphere. Kiyomi is one of the best Japanese restaurants in South East Queensland. The pool complex is large and well-maintained. Rooms in the newer tower are solid 4.5-star quality. The older tower shows its age. The casino dominates the ground floor's atmosphere, which will either appeal or repel, there's no ignoring it. For a weekend of entertainment, dining, and beach access without the Surfers Paradise circus, it works well.

What We Love

  • Kiyomi restaurant is legitimately excellent, worth visiting even if not staying
  • Broadbeach location beats Surfers Paradise for dining and walkability
  • Large pool complex with swim-up bar and poolside service
  • Multiple restaurant and bar options within the complex, no need to leave
  • Theatre and live entertainment on-site
  • Newer tower rooms are well-appointed with good views
  • Dorsett Gold Coast within the complex offers budget alternative

Consider

  • Casino atmosphere permeates the ground floor, unavoidable when entering or exiting
  • Not directly beachfront, requires crossing the road and a short walk to the sand
  • Older tower rooms feel dated compared to the refurbished sections
  • Can be noisy on event nights (concerts, fights) even on hotel floors
  • The complex is large and can feel impersonal, more convention centre than boutique hotel
  • Parking is expensive ($25-35/night) given the Broadbeach location

The Rooms

Two towers with noticeably different quality. The newer/refurbished tower has clean contemporary design, good king beds, proper blackout curtains, and modern bathrooms with rain showers. Ocean-view rooms on higher floors look out past Broadbeach to the surf. The older tower rooms are functional but tired, carpet, bathrooms, and furnishings all showing age. Always request the newer tower when booking. Room sizes are adequate at 32-38 square metres for standard rooms.

Location

Set back from the beach by about 300 metres in Broadbeach's commercial precinct. The walk to the sand takes 5-7 minutes through Kurrawa Park, pleasant but not direct beach access. Broadbeach Mall and Victoria Avenue restaurants are a 2-minute walk. Pacific Fair shopping centre is 10 minutes on foot. G:link tram stops right outside. For dining and nightlife, the location is excellent. For pure beach proximity, Surfers Esplanade properties win.

Amenities

The pool complex is the standout: large resort-style pool with a swim-up bar, separate lap pool, sundeck with day beds, and poolside food service. Day spa offers standard treatments. Gym is well-equipped. The casino floor is large with table games, slots, and high-roller areas. The theatre hosts touring shows, comedy, and events. Multiple bars including Atrium Bar (cocktails) and sports bars.

Dining

Kiyomi (contemporary Japanese) is the star, Chase Kojima's menu includes the best sashimi on the Coast and a sake list that rivals Brisbane's top Japanese restaurants. Cucina Vivo does reliable Italian. Garden Kitchen & Bar handles casual dining and breakfast. The pool bar serves burgers and casual bites. Room service is available but unremarkable. For a casino resort, the dining quality significantly exceeds expectations.

Service

Standard large-hotel service, professional and efficient but not personalised. Check-in can be slow during events when the lobby fills with concert or fight crowds. Pool attendants are helpful. Restaurant service at Kiyomi is notably better than the hotel average. Housekeeping is consistent. Concierge handles standard requests well. Don't expect the attention of a boutique property.

Value for Money

Rooms from $250/night in the newer tower, $200 in the older tower. Given the included entertainment, dining options, pool facilities, and Broadbeach location, it represents fair value. The Dorsett Gold Coast within the same complex offers rooms from $180/night, a legitimate budget hack for accessing Star facilities. School holiday and event weekends push rates 30-40% higher.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Star Gold Coast just a casino?
No, the casino is significant but it's also a proper hotel, restaurant precinct, and entertainment venue. You can stay, eat at Kiyomi, use the pool, and attend shows without ever stepping onto the casino floor. But you will walk through the gaming area to access the lifts.
Which tower should I request at The Star Gold Coast?
Always request the newer/refurbished tower. Rooms are significantly better appointed. The older tower is functional but tired. If you can't get the newer tower, consider the Dorsett within the same complex as an alternative.
Is The Star Gold Coast on the beach?
Not directly. It's about 300 metres from the beach, requiring a 5-7 minute walk through Kurrawa Park. If beachfront access is your priority, consider Peppers Soul or Hilton Surfers Paradise instead.
How does The Star compare to staying in Surfers Paradise?
Better dining (Broadbeach), better location for adults, less party noise. But less beachfront proximity, fewer budget options, and less Gold Coast "experience." The Star suits those who've done Surfers and want something different.
