Novotel Wollongong Northbeach owns the beachfront position in Wollongong. No other hotel puts you this close to the sand, with ocean views from upper-floor rooms and the escarpment rising dramatically behind the city. The pool, gym, restaurant, and room service make it the most complete hotel package in town. Rooms are standard Novotel , functional and clean rather than memorable. But at $230/night for an ocean-view room, you're paying less than half of what an equivalent beachfront room costs in Sydney. For a beach holiday or South Coast road trip base, this is the pick.
Ocean-view rooms on higher floors are the reason to stay here , the Pacific Ocean fills the window, with North Beach below and the Illawarra Escarpment visible when you look south. Standard rooms face the car park or city , avoid these unless budget demands it. Room size is around 28sqm for standard, 32sqm for superior. Bathrooms are clean and functional. The Novotel bed is comfortable , their one consistent strength across the chain. Balconies on some ocean-facing rooms.
Room Type | Size | From | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
Standard Room Most Popular | 28 sqm | $190 | Budget stays (no views) |
Ocean View Room | 28 sqm | $230 | Couples, beach holidays |
Superior Ocean View | 32 sqm | $270 | Extra space, higher floors |
Directly on North Beach, at the northern end of Wollongong's beach strip. Cross the road and you're on the sand. The Blue Mile walking path runs along the coast from here to the harbour lighthouse , a flat 3km walk. Crown Street Mall (shopping, cafes) is a 10-minute walk south. Wollongong Station is 15 minutes on foot. For driving, the M1 Motorway and Grand Pacific Drive are both accessible within 10 minutes.
Heated outdoor pool with ocean views , the highlight amenity. It's large enough for laps and the setting is excellent. Gym with cardio and weights. Lighthouse Restaurant and Bar serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Room service available. Conference facilities (which means occasional corporate groups). On-site parking at $15/day. Free WiFi (slow).
Lighthouse Restaurant handles all meals. Breakfast buffet is solid , standard hotel spread with eggs, bacon, pastries, cereal, and fruit. Lunch and dinner are bistro-standard: steaks, fish, pasta, salads in the $28-38 range. Not bad, not memorable. The better strategy: eat breakfast at the hotel, walk into Wollongong for lunch or dinner. Babyface Kitchen on Keira Street and Her Bar on Crown Street are both better dinner options within 15 minutes on foot.
At $230/night for an ocean-view room, Novotel Wollongong Northbeach offers genuine beachfront value. A comparable room at Novotel Sydney Manly Pacific costs $380-450. Novotel Sydney Darling Harbour runs $320-400 without beach access. The Wollongong version gives you the ocean, the pool, the escarpment backdrop, and 40% savings. Standard (non-ocean-view) rooms at $190 are harder to justify , Sage Hotel ($200) has better design without the beach but with more character.
