Quick Answer

The Sunshine Coast isn't a single destination , it's a 100km stretch from Caloundra to Noosa with wildly different pricing at each end. Noosa (north) is premium: Sofitel Noosa Pacific from $450/night, Peppers from $420. Mooloolaba (middle) offers beachfront value: Mantra from $240, Oceans from $290. Caloundra (south) is budget-friendly: apartments from $160, Rumba Beach Resort from $260. The Hinterland (Montville, Maleny) is a completely different experience: cool climate, rainforest, cheese and wine.

The most common mistake people make with the Sunshine Coast is treating it as one place. It's not. Noosa, at the northern end, operates at Byron Bay or Gold Coast premium pricing with a restaurant scene that competes with capital cities. Mooloolaba, in the middle, delivers family-friendly beachfront at 40-50% less than Noosa. Caloundra, at the southern end, is the honest budget option , functional, local, and affordable. And then there's the Hinterland , Montville, Maleny, and the ranges behind the coast , which is a different holiday entirely: cool climate, rainforest walks, cheese tastings, and views back to the ocean. The key is knowing which bit suits you.

Noosa , The Premium End

Noosa Heads is where the money is. Hastings Street is a 400-metre strip of boutique shops, restaurants, and luxury hotels that backs directly onto Main Beach , one of Australia's only north-facing beaches, which means all-day sun and sheltered conditions. Noosa National Park starts at the eastern end of Hastings Street, with coastal walks and secluded bays. The restaurant scene (Locale, Noosa Beach House, Bistro C, Sails) competes with Brisbane. Accommodation here starts at $300/night for a basic studio and runs to $1,800+ for Makepeace Island. Sofitel Noosa Pacific is the premium hotel on Hastings Street. Peppers Noosa and RACV Noosa offer resort-style stays slightly back from the main strip.

Mooloolaba , Beachfront Without the Premium

Mooloolaba is 25 minutes south of Noosa and offers 40-50% savings on beachfront accommodation. The Mooloolaba Esplanade has a solid strip of restaurants, cafes, and bars. The beach is beautiful, patrolled, and family-friendly. SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast is here. The accommodation is predominantly apartment-style: Mantra Mooloolaba Beach, Oceans Mooloolaba, and numerous smaller buildings. For families, this is the sweet spot , beach, restaurants, aquarium, and manageable prices. The trade-off: Mooloolaba lacks Noosa's national park, Hastings Street polish, and fine dining depth.

Caloundra , The Budget-Friendly End

Caloundra sits at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, 30 minutes south of Mooloolaba and about 1 hour from Brisbane. Kings Beach is the main swimming beach , patrolled, sheltered, and family-friendly with a saltwater pool at the headland. Bulcock Beach faces the Pumicestone Passage (calm water, good for kayaking). Accommodation is the most affordable on the Sunshine Coast: apartments from $140/night, Rumba Beach Resort from $260 for a two-bedroom. Caloundra doesn't pretend to be Noosa. It's an honest, unpretentious beach town with good fish and chips and less traffic. For families watching their budget, it works well.

The Hinterland , A Different Holiday

The Sunshine Coast Hinterland (Montville, Maleny, Mapleton) sits in the Blackall Range, 400-500 metres above sea level. The climate is noticeably cooler , 5-8°C below the coast, which means cosy fires in winter and relief from summer humidity. The landscape is rainforest and dairy country with views back to the coast. Montville is a quaint (verging on twee) village with craft shops, fudge stores, and B&Bs. Maleny is more grounded , a working town with a cooperative bookshop, local brewery, and excellent cafes. Narrows Escape Rainforest Retreat ($450/night) is the premium hinterland stay. Spicers Clovelly Estate ($550/night) combines luxury with a celebrated restaurant. Budget options include B&Bs and cottages from $120/night.

Getting to the Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY) in Maroochydore has flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide , but the route network is limited and fares can be high. Most visitors fly into Brisbane Airport (BNE) and drive up: Caloundra is 1 hour, Mooloolaba is 1.5 hours, Noosa is 2 hours. The Bruce Highway handles most of the drive. Alternatively, the new direct train from Brisbane to Sunshine Coast (Beerwah connection) takes about 1.5 hours to Nambour, then you need a car. Having a car on the Sunshine Coast is essentially mandatory , unlike the Gold Coast, there's no light rail connecting the towns.

Tips for Booking

1Match town to budget

Don't book Noosa on a Caloundra budget. Seriously. The gap is 40-60%. Work out your nightly budget first, then find the town that fits. Mooloolaba is the Goldilocks zone for most visitors.

2Car is non-negotiable

Unlike the Gold Coast (light rail) or central Byron Bay (walkable), the Sunshine Coast has no useful public transport between towns. Budget $50-70/day for a car rental or bring your own.

3Noosa National Park is free

One of Queensland's best coastal walks starts at the end of Hastings Street. Free entry, no booking. The walk to Hell's Gates (2.5 hours return) passes Tea Tree Bay and Granite Bay , both good swimming spots.

4Hinterland makes a great day trip

Even if you're staying on the coast, a day trip to Montville and Maleny is worthwhile. 45 minutes from Mooloolaba. Stop at Maleny Dairies, Brouhaha Brewery, and Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve (free rainforest boardwalk).

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to stay on the Sunshine Coast?
Noosa for luxury and restaurants. Mooloolaba for family-friendly beachfront value. Caloundra for budget beach holidays. Montville/Maleny for cool-climate hinterland retreats. There is no single "best" , it depends entirely on your budget and what you want from the trip.
How much do Sunshine Coast hotels cost?
Caloundra: $140-260/night. Mooloolaba: $200-350/night. Noosa: $300-600/night for hotels, $1,800+ for Makepeace Island. Hinterland: $120-550/night. School holidays and summer (Dec-Jan) add 30-50% across the board.
Is the Sunshine Coast better than the Gold Coast?
Different. The Sunshine Coast is quieter, more nature-focused, and spread out. The Gold Coast has better nightlife, theme parks, light rail, and more hotel competition keeping prices lower. Families wanting resort pools and attractions: Gold Coast. Couples or families wanting quieter beaches and national parks: Sunshine Coast.
Do I need a car on the Sunshine Coast?
Yes. There is no useful public transport connecting Sunshine Coast towns. You could manage without a car if staying in central Noosa Heads (walkable) or Mooloolaba (walkable), but you'd miss the hinterland and other beaches. Budget for a rental car.
When is the best time to visit the Sunshine Coast?
March to May and September to November , warm weather (22-28°C), less humidity than summer, and lower accommodation prices. Winter (June-August) is mild and dry but water temperatures drop to 19-21°C. Summer (December-February) is hot, humid, and peak pricing.
