Our Verdict

Aurora Alice Springs wins on one thing: location. It sits directly on Todd Mall, Alice Springs's main pedestrian strip , galleries, restaurants, cafes, and shops are literally at your door. No other hotel in town offers this walk-everywhere convenience. The rooms are functional and recently maintained but won't excite anyone , think solid 3.5-star motel standard with air conditioning that works, a clean bathroom, and a bed that's comfortable enough after a day in the desert. The pool is small. The on-site restaurant (Red Ochre Grill) serves decent Australian cuisine with outback flair. At $180/night, it undercuts the DoubleTree by $60 while putting you in a better location for town exploration. If room quality is your priority, the DoubleTree wins. If location and value matter more, Aurora earns its place.

What We Love

  • Best location in Alice Springs , directly on Todd Mall, walkable to everything in the CBD
  • Red Ochre Grill restaurant serves genuine outback cuisine (camel, kangaroo, barramundi) , a draw in itself
  • At $180/night, significantly cheaper than DoubleTree while being more central
  • Free parking and air conditioning
  • Walking distance to galleries, the Araluen Cultural Precinct, and all Todd Mall restaurants
  • Pool, small as it is, provides essential cooling in summer months

Consider

  • Room quality is functional 3.5-star , clean but not inspiring, dated in places
  • Pool is small , adequate for cooling off, not for swimming laps or lounging
  • Bathroom fit-out shows its age , functional but due for a refresh
  • No Hilton or chain loyalty program , no points, no status benefits
  • Limited facilities beyond rooms, pool, and restaurant , no gym, no spa
  • Todd Mall can be noisy on event nights and weekends

The Rooms

Standard King rooms are about 28-30sqm , compact but clean. The fit-out is honest 3.5-star: commercial-grade carpet, a bed with decent but not luxurious linen, a small desk, and a bathroom with a shower-over-bath configuration. Some rooms have been more recently refreshed than others , request a renovated room at booking. Air conditioning is effective and essential. Views are limited , most rooms overlook the car park or internal courtyard rather than the MacDonnell Ranges. The room is a place to sleep and shower between desert adventures, not a destination in itself. At $180/night, the expectations align with the delivery.

Location

This is the Aurora's strength. Todd Mall , Alice Springs's pedestrian heart , is literally outside the front door. Within a 5-minute walk: Aboriginal art galleries (Papunya Tula, Mbantua), cafes (Page 27, Epilogue Lounge), restaurants (Overlanders, Hanuman at the DoubleTree), and souvenir shops. The Araluen Cultural Precinct (Alice Springs' main cultural venue with art galleries and museum) is a 15-minute walk or 3-minute drive. The town's Saturday morning Todd Mall Markets happen right outside the hotel. No other Alice Springs hotel puts you this close to the town's character and cultural assets.

Amenities

The pool is small , a plunge pool rather than a resort feature. It serves its purpose for cooling off after a hot day but won't win any awards. Red Ochre Grill is the on-site restaurant and functions as a genuine attraction: the outback-themed menu (kangaroo, camel, native herbs) is well-executed and draws non-guests. Free parking in the hotel lot. WiFi works throughout. No gym, no spa, no business centre. The amenity package is minimal, which is reflected in the price. For most Alice Springs visitors who are out exploring all day, the hotel room and a functional pool are all that's needed.

Dining

Red Ochre Grill is the highlight , a restaurant that takes native Australian ingredients seriously. The kangaroo loin, camel sausage, and barramundi with bush tomato are well-prepared and give you an outback dining experience that tourist-themed restaurants in the CBD do less convincingly. Breakfast is available and adequate. For other options, step outside: Epilogue Lounge for coffee and light meals, Overlanders Steakhouse for the full outback theme (tourist-oriented but fun), and Page 27 for brunch. Todd Mall has enough variety for a 3-4 night stay without repeating. Hanuman at the DoubleTree (10-minute walk) is the best restaurant in Alice Springs.

Service

Friendly and practical without polish. Staff are locals who know the area well , ask about road conditions, the best gorge for swimming, or gallery recommendations and you'll get useful answers. Check-in is efficient. Housekeeping is reliable. The service style matches the hotel's position: a well-run regional property that treats guests warmly without the formality of chain-hotel protocols. Tour bookings and car rental can be arranged through the front desk.

Value for Money

At $180/night in peak season and $120-140 in summer, Aurora offers the best value-to-location ratio in Alice Springs. You save $60/night versus the DoubleTree and gain a better walking location. The trade-off is room quality , Aurora's rooms are a clear step below DoubleTree's. For travellers who spend all day in the desert and want a clean bed and a good restaurant at a fair price, Aurora delivers. For travellers who want Hilton-standard rooms and a proper pool, the DoubleTree is worth the premium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Aurora Alice Springs better than DoubleTree?
Better location (Todd Mall vs Barrett Drive) and better price ($180 vs $240). Worse rooms, worse pool, no loyalty program. Choose Aurora for value and walking convenience. Choose DoubleTree for room quality and Hilton standards.
Is Red Ochre Grill worth eating at?
Yes , it takes native Australian ingredients seriously and delivers well-prepared outback cuisine. The kangaroo and camel dishes are better than tourist-themed alternatives on Todd Mall. Worth visiting even if you're not staying at the hotel.
Can you walk to things from Aurora Alice Springs?
This is the hotel's main advantage. Todd Mall galleries, restaurants, and cafes are at your doorstep. The Araluen Cultural Precinct is a 15-minute walk. It's the most walkable hotel in Alice Springs by a significant margin.
Is the pool good?
It's small , a plunge pool for cooling off, not for swimming or lounging all afternoon. If pool quality matters (especially in summer), Crowne Plaza Lasseters has the best pool in Alice Springs. The DoubleTree's pool is also better.
Is Aurora Alice Springs noisy?
Todd Mall is a pedestrian zone, so no traffic noise. Event nights and weekend evenings can produce some noise from nearby bars and restaurants. Light sleepers may want a room facing the courtyard rather than the Mall. It's manageable for most guests.
