Ovolo Nishi is the most interesting hotel in Canberra and one of the best design hotels in Australia. Built into the architecturally ambitious Nishi building in NewActon, it feels like nowhere else , recycled timber, dramatic atriums, art everywhere, and a sustainability commitment that goes beyond marketing. Monster Kitchen & Bar downstairs is a destination restaurant that would be notable in any city. The free minibar and free laundry are Ovolo signatures that genuinely add value. It's not for everyone , the design is bold and the rooms are compact , but for travellers who care about where they sleep having a point of view, Nishi delivers.
Ovolo uses playful category names: VIBE (25sqm), GO (30sqm), GO LARGE (35sqm), and suites. VIBE rooms are genuinely small , fine for a night or two, but book GO or above for any real stay. The design uses the Nishi building's raw materials , recycled timber panels, concrete features, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Bedding is excellent. The free minibar includes local beers, wines, sodas, and snacks , a genuine perk, not just a token gesture. In-room coffee uses Nespresso capsules. The hotel is a 10-minute walk to Civic (CBD), 10 minutes to the National Gallery via the lake, and 15 minutes to Braddon's Lonsdale Street. Parliament House and Barton are 10-15 minutes by car.

It's genuinely good and would be notable in Sydney or Melbourne, which makes it remarkable for Canberra. The wine list leans natural and Australian. A. Baker handles mornings with excellent sourdough, pastries, and coffee. Between Monster Kitchen and A. Baker, you could eat at the hotel for days without disappointment. Room service is available but limited , eat downstairs.
