Mayfair Hotel is Adelaide's most complete luxury hotel , a heritage building on King William Street converted with taste and restraint. The rooftop bar (Hennessy) is a genuine destination with the best views in the city. Rooms are well-finished without being flashy, and the service strikes the right balance between attentive and relaxed. It's not competing with Sydney or Melbourne's top tier on scale, but for Adelaide, it sets the standard and the pricing is remarkably fair for what you get.
Standard Mayfair rooms start at 30sqm with high ceilings that make them feel larger. Heritage features , original cornices, tall windows, some exposed brick , vary by room, which gives individual character but means not every room is identical. Suites on upper floors are properly spacious (50-70sqm) and justify the upgrade. Bathrooms are modern with rain showers and good fixtures. The beds are excellent , firm but comfortable with quality linen. Ask for a higher floor facing east for morning light and less street noise.
Room Type | Size | From | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
Mayfair Room Most Popular | 30 sqm | $280 | Couples, short stays |
Mayfair Suite | 50 sqm | $380 | Extra space, higher views |
Penthouse Suite | 70 sqm | $550 | Special occasions |
King William Street is Adelaide's central axis, and the Mayfair sits right on it. Rundle Mall is a 5-minute walk north. Central Market is 10 minutes south. North Terrace cultural precinct is 3 minutes north. The East End bar scene on Rundle Street is 8 minutes. You can't be more central in Adelaide. The tram to Glenelg departs from Victoria Square, a 5-minute walk south.
The rooftop bar is the headline , Hennessy occupies the building's former clock tower and terrace, with 360-degree views over the CBD, Adelaide Hills, and Gulf St Vincent. It gets busy on weekends but weeknight visits are more relaxed. The spa offers treatments. The gym is small but functional. No pool is the main gap. Concierge is knowledgeable about wine region tours and restaurant bookings.
The Mayfair Room handles breakfast and dinner , both are competent but not exceptional. Breakfast is a solid buffet with made-to-order options. Dinner is modern Australian, well-executed but predictable. The honest advice: eat breakfast at the hotel and dinner on Leigh Street (10-minute walk) where Africola, Shobosho, and Udaberri are among Australia's most interesting restaurants. Hennessy rooftop serves bar food that's above average for a rooftop venue.
Mayfair's service reflects Adelaide itself , genuine, unhurried, and personal without being stiff. Staff remember returning guests. Concierge recommendations are actual opinions rather than safe choices. Check-in is smooth. The smaller scale (170 rooms vs 300+ at chain competitors) means staff aren't spread thin.
At $280-400/night for standard rooms, Mayfair is Adelaide's most expensive hotel and still 30-40% cheaper than equivalent Sydney or Melbourne properties. The heritage building, rooftop bar, and central location make the premium over cheaper CBD options ($180-250) justifiable. For a special occasion in Adelaide, it's the clear first choice. For regular business trips, InterContinental or Sofitel offer similar quality at lower rates.
